The briefing
Last year, I chose my expert direction. This became design. For expert design, the assignment was to choose a non-profit organisation and help them with a research question. I chose MS Liga Vlaanderen. The goal was to make a video about the booklet: The invisible symptoms of MS.
My mom's diagnosis
A few months before the assignment, my mother had to be rushed to hospital. After many tests, she was diagnosed with MS. This is a chronic disease affecting the central nervous system. As a result, my mother has problems with her legs, memory and concentration. For the past few weeks now, she has also been struggling with her vision. But what is remarkable is that when you meet her, she looks "healthy". You don't see that anything is wrong. I wanted to do more research on this to make people aware about invisible symptoms.
The design
Video
I had a month to make this assignment. Because of this, I had to think carefully about how the video would be short, yet powerful. I really enjoyed doing research and talking to people about the same situations. It was nice to meet these people. The cooperation with MS Liga Vlaanderen was amazing, they were very nice and helped where they could.
The book
I really wanted to do something with graphic design. I had never made a booklet before. It was really fun to design it. MS Liga Vlaanderen is now using this booklet with young people who someone they know has MS. I am very satisfied with the project. It allowed me to give the diagnosis a place and grow closer to my mother.
